If you've recently bought a new PC, or are planning to buy a new PC, you should consider making some immediate changes for security purposes.
Whenever I set up a new computer, I follow these steps:
1. First, I remove any unwanted software. Typically, these include programs that I don't need or use, including:
- Anti-virus programs like Symantec or McAfee. These tend to be 60 or 90-day evaluations, at which point you have to pay to continue using them. As well, these software packages are tremendous resource hogs on your computer, and end up slowing it down. Don't worry - we'll replace them with some free software shortly.
- Programs like eBay, eSobi, and anything else I don' use.
2. Second, I install security software for protection against viruses and malware. These include:
- Microsoft Security Essentials - This is a free anti-virus program from Microsoft, and is one of the more reliable solutions available.
- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - This is another free product that is extremely effective for removing some of the more insipid 'trojan' style viruses. For more information, see Malwarebytes.org.
- Avira AntiVir Personal - Another free software, this adds another layer of virus protection to your PC.
